The above-mentioned chart gives information about long-term international resettlement in the UK, namely immigration, emigration and net migration from 1999 to 2008.
Overall, it is apparent that there was a gradual increase in the number of immigrants and emigrants, however, the figure for immigration was higher than that of emigration. Another noteworthy observation is that net migration witnessed a variation over the period of 9 years.
In terms of immigration and emigration, in 1999 there were about 450, 000 people who came to the UK and the statistic of immigration rose steadily and reached a peak of nearly 600, 000 people in 2004, after which it remained stable in the next 4 years. Similarly, there were nearly 300, 000 emigrants in 1999 and the number of people who left the UK gradually grew in the next 7 years before decreasing in 2007.
As far as net migration is concerned, the figure for net migration stood over 150, 000 people in 1999 and it reached a plateau until 2003 before hitting the highest point to 250, 000 people in 2004. Nevertheless, the rate of net migration fluctuated after 2004 and it declined to nearly 170, 000 people in 2008. ty
