The graph below shows the number of passenger railway journey made in Great Britain, namely National rail network, London Underground, and Light rail & metro system, between 1950 and 2004/5. Unit are measured in millions of passengers. Overall, the number of passengers using national rail network were the highest, followed by London Under Ground and Light rail & metro system’s number of passengers respectively. Starting with 1, 000 million passengers in 1950, the number of National rail network slightly increased to around 1, 100 million customers in 1960 and then dramatically decreased to 700 million customers in 1980. After that, the figure had witnessed a sharp increase in number of passengers, rose back to 1, 100 million people in 2004/05 and exceeded London Underground’s number of passengers. Starting with around 700 million passengers in 1950, the number of passengers in London Underground remained stable to 1972 before reached the bottom of 500 million people in 1980; however, the figure then increased sharly and reached a peak of nearly 1, 000 million customers in 2004/05. Starting with around 10 million passengers in 1962, approximately as 80 times lower as the others compared to the same time, the figure of light rail & metro system slightly declined to 0 people in 1980 before gradually rose back to around 200 million customers in 2004/05
