The graph illustrates the amount of three different spreads intake from 1981 until 2007. Overall, the consumption of spreads declined over the years with the exception of Lowfat & reduced spreads that had notable growth from 1996 to 2007.
From 1981 until 1986 there was a striking increment of butter consumption from 140 grams to 160 grams. Then, for the next 21 years the usage of butter significantly decreased to only around 50 grams.
Contradictory to Butter that experienced a significant change from 1986 until 1996, Margarine consumption was more stable with only 10 grams increase to 100 grams in 1991 and retained the number in the five following years. However, there was a noticeable drop of Margarine annual intake from 100 grams to only 40 grams in 2007, making it the least preferred spread compared to the other spreads.
As the new spread type that just started to penetrate the market in 1996, Low fat and reduced spread managed to achieve substantial growth in 5 years from only less than 20 grams to more than 80. Even though the number of this spread dropped to less than 80 grams in 2007, low fat and reduced spreads was still the most favorable spreads compared to the other two spreads.
