Overall, agriculture an industry are the two most common purposes. While, the main purpose in the water consumption in North America and Europe is for the industry, the remaining places tend to use water for agriculture.
As can be seen from the charts, in all four regions, a vast majority of water is used for farming with 88%, 84%, 81%, 71% for central Asia, Africa, Southeast Asia an South America respectively. It is noticeable that only in Southeast Asia the proporyion of water for industrial consumption is higher than that for households with 12% compared to 7%. In the remaining three places, more water is used for families than for industry with 7% and 5% in Central Asia, 9% and 7% in Africa, 19% and 10% in South America.
By contrast, North America and Europe share the same pattern but they show great differences from the four previous areas. More specifically, nearly a half of water is for industrial consumption with 53% in Europe and 48% in North America. Meanwhile, the use of water for farming account for the scecond largest proportion with 32% and 39%. In use two areas, the least water is used for families with 15% and 13%.
