The difference between popular culture and more traditional culture is vast. Discuss. EdMdR
Both popular and folk culture places a considerable reliance on formulas and conventions, which is almost the only point of similarity in their defining characteristics. Obviously, the gap between popular culture and more traditional culture is particularly significant and could be shown in several different aspects. Fundamentally, popular culture and folk culture differ from each other most sharply in the scale of population who maintain them, a principal element to classify culture. It is conspicuous that the scale of influence covered by a popular culture is much vaster than which covered by a traditional culture. In the world, folk culture is practiced primarily by small, homogeneous and indigenous groups, whereas popular culture is found in large, heterogeneous societies. Secondly, as regard origin, mass culture is usually the product of economically developed countries and is driven by marketing, for instance, fast food and fashionable clothes->internet->phát triển nhanh chóng. Folk customs, on the contrary, are originated from anonymous sources, at unknown date and by unidentified creators. ->steady, thay đổi chậm về nội hàm In addition, the diffusion of popular and folk culture also makes a key and definite distinction between these two concepts. Popular culture diffuses rapidly and extensively through modern communication technology such as television, electronic articles or social media platforms. By contrast, more traditional culture moves across space slowly by relocation diffusion, primarily through migration. This difference could be well exemplified by music: while folk songs are transmitted orally and modified from one generation to the next, modern songs, on the other hand, are broadcast and sold online. As a result of difference in transmission, the long-term stability of folk culture can be maintained properly as opposed to the one of pop culture, which is very changeable. To conclude, it is undeniable that popular and traditional culture contrast starkly in not only the origin but also the characteristics such as scale and diffusion.
