The diagram shows the construction of a simple water filter and how it functions to provide clean drinking water. The whole filtering procedure begins with passing impure water through various materials and ends with the production of clean drinking water. The lid is removed from a tank containing three materials which will acts as filters while impure water is poured into the top of the tank. The lid can then be replaced. The material at the top is sand and this is the first filter when the impure water is added. Below the sand is a second material, which acts as a filter which is less fine than sand. Having passed through the sand, the impure water then drains through the second filter – charcoal. The lowest filter in this tank is gravel, and the impure water finally passes through this material, which is coarser than the sand and charcoal above it. A pipe, near the bottom of the tank, takes the filtered water into a second container. This stores the purified water. A tap at the base of this second tank can be opened to provide clean drinking water for the user.
