The figure illustrates the process of eliminating salt from seawater to transform it into drinking water. Generally, it is clear that there are four stages in the production of drinking water. The process begins with pre-treatment for sea water, and ends at the integration stage. At the first stage of the process, a huge amount of sea water is transported to a pre-treatment filter system via salt water intake so that many solid objects which are relatively large size or undrinkable substances can be separated from salt water and then returned to the sea. Next, salt water is forced through a membrane at high pressure in order to only allow water molecules to pass though whereas all other impurities as well as salt are kept and sent back to the sea. Regarding the remaining stages of the process, water continues to be carried to a post-treatment system which adds various substances, for instance, lime, chlorine, and fluoride into water to kill any harmful bacteria. By this time, water now becomes cleaner and drinkable. Eventually, such drinking water is contained in storage and is ready to be delivered to the public via a water supply system.
