The picture below illustrates the steps and equipment involved in the process of making lead pencils. Overall, the production has a series of stages, starting with planting the trees, manufacturing, and then ending with packaging products. At the first stage, the seeds are cultivated in nurseries before being replanted four months later. After three years, the trees are thinned with an eye to increase the growth potential and improve the quality of the wood. Subsequently, when the trees are 14 years old, they are being chopped down to make logs for the production process. Coming to the next step, the wood is cut into thin ‘slats’, treated, and left for 2 months to dry. Then, a groove is made into the slat and the glue is used to stick the black leads in the groove. After that, an empty slat is put on the top to make a sandwich, which is then heated whereas hard-pressed at the same time. Once the sandwich is cut to produce individual pencils, lead pencils are painted, sharpened, and stamped, after which they are packaged before being delivered to the markets.
