The chart illustrates the number of people who possessed houses and those who were tenants in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. The value is measured in percentage.  Overall, the chart shows a general drop in rented houses and an increase in owned accommodation between the two years. In the early years there was an enormous number of rented homes, while the largest number of owned properties is seen in the later years. There was a same number of both the owned households and houses rented midway through the illustrated period.  Rented houses started at its peak in 1918 and gradually went down till 2001 where there was slight increase of about 36% in 2011 from approximately 32% in 2001. In contrary, owned household started on a low of about 22% in 1918 and gradually fluctuated till it got up to its peak in 2001 with just below 70% of the households and had a small decrease by 2011 of about 5%.  In 1971 there was a similarity as both rented households and owned property recorded 50% each.
