Given is a chart illustrating the proportion of families’ owning and renting houses in England and Wales from 1918 and 2011. It is evident from the information supplied that owing and renting showed opposite trends with a sharp increase in ownership and an inverse decline in renting. Moreover, by the end of the period, overall ownership had overtaken renting by a wide margin. As shown by the figure, decreasing from approximately 78% in 1918 to about 69% in 1939, the proportion of households in rented accommodation remained stable until 1953. The trend continued to decline steadily by almost 20% until 1971, reached 50%. In contrast, the percentage of families in owned houses climbed significantly from 20% in 1918 to just over 30% in 1939 and remained unchanged until 1953, before becoming equal with rental in 1971. Looking at the data, it is clear that the same trend continued for both rental and ownership. The trend for ownership rose to just under 70% until 2001 before falling gradually to 65% in 2011, while rental went down dramatically to about 31% until 2001 and then witnessed a slight increase to 35% by the end of the period.
