The chart illustrates the number of trips that have been made by children during the year 1990 and 2010 using various means of transport to travel to the school and back. The data depicted is over a period of 20 years. Overall, car passenger has had a steep upward shift for 2010 while the other means of transport see a downward change as opposed to their usage in 1990. Walking was extremely popular in 1990 where children made over 12 million trips per year. This is also the highest number of trips made throughout the illustrated period. Car was the least utilized medium with a little over 4 million trips. Cycling and walking along with bus were equally preferred and bus usage has been relatively higher than the latter two by about a million trips during the year 1990. As opposed to the earlier time, car passenger gained immense popularity for the year 2010 rising by almost 7 million trips per annum. This mode of travel has been followed by walking with almost half the rounds. The least used vehicle is the cycle with just 2 million trips. Bus and the combination of bus and walk made up 3 and 5 million rounds respectively.
