The table details the number of children who joined three different sports in Britain between 2008 and 2014. Overall, the figures for all categories underwent an upward trend with the most significant seen in athletics. Another striking feature is that football was always the most popular among UK children whereas athletics ranked last before overtaking swimming in 2011. Turning our attention to the detail, in 2008, the number of children who took part in football stood at about eight million, which was even higher than those for athletics (0. 5 million) and swimming (2 million) combined. Over 3 years, the statistics in football remained static, while those in swimming increased five-fold at 2. 5 million and were equal to swimming in 2011. In the other half of the period, the number of children partaking in football saw slight growth and reached a peak of 8. 5 million in 2014. Meanwhile, the volume in athletics continued climbing significantly, stabilizing at about five million. At the same time, the figure in swimming experienced a stable rise to around 3, 5 million.
