Overall, all of the figures increased gradually and moderately from 1981 to 1991, but they increased significantly in the next 11 years. To begin with, about 38% of the population of Connacht spoke Irish, but that of other 4 regions, namely, State, Leincter, Munster and Ulster were 30%, about 27%, just under 35% and 30% respectively. Also, all of the figures increased moderately by 1991(State by about 3%, Leincter by 1%, Munster by approximately 3%, Connacht by roughly 2%, and Ulster by 1%. Turning to the rest of the period, all of the provinces saw a significant growth by 2002. Connacht was still dominant with about 47% of the population, speaking Irish whereas that of Munster and State increased significantly by almost 10% and nearly 11% accordingly. Finally, about two-fifths of the populace of Ulster talked in Irish which was bigger than Leincter's by about 5%.
