Personally, the painting which I feel the most impressive is “ The Persistence of Memory “. It was made in 1931 by Salvador Dalí. This masterpiece has been on display in Museum of Modern Art since 1934. The story behind the painting's birth is as interesting and famous as it is. One evening, Dalí and his wife, Gala, were enjoying Camembert wine and cheese with some guests. After that, Gala and the guests decided to go to the movies and Dalí stayed at home because of a headache. Then Dali fell asleep. When he woke up, he found Gala was still not back yet. He looked at his watch and felt the time go by so slowly. On the table, there was some melting cheese. Dalí observed the clock and the cheese then came to the conclusion: “ Time is as melted as that cheese “. As a result, Dalí paints three distorting clocks like the cheese which he had seen before on a haunting landscape. The next morning, he showed his wife his work. He blindfolded Gala, led her into the drawing room, when he took his hand out of her eyes, he asked: " How long will it take you to forget this painting? ". In just a fleeting moment, Gala replied: " No one can forget it when they see it ". Gala's answer is also the answer of most of those who have seen the “ Persistence of Memory “. Using oil painting, the painting was so beautiful but still it was so melancholy that most people looking at it, was obsessed like the his wife’s first look feeling. With its uncanny, otherworldly feel, and its melting pocket watches and mollusk-like central figure strewn about a barren landscape, Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory seems wholly imaginary. In fact, it sprang not only from the artist’s imagination, but also from his memories of the coastline of his native Catalonia, Spain. As he once explained: “ This picture represented a landscape near Port Lligat, whose rocks were lighted by a transparent and melancholy twilight; in the foreground an olive tree with its branches cut, and without leaves. ”. About the three melting clocks with the blurred face, perhaps never before has the sadness of surrealist painting been so vigorous. It makes people feel that everything will be wither with the time. The picture's message seems to have gone beyond the idea's starting story. The soft, mesmerizing faces are said by art critics to portray the state of Europe at the time, when World War II was on the verge of breaking out. The absurd is operated no longer according to the obvious order that one has always seen. That is also the reason for Dali's soft watch to become a symbol of the obsession of time in modern society. The endless space in the background of the painting and the use of classical one-dimensional realism light hitting the face, the clock against the dark background also makes it more haunting than ever. Although the yellow color flares up on the horizon of the distant sea, it seems that the melancholy mood cannot be stopped. It looks like ants swarm on the back of the clocks in the highlight left corner of the picture. It all comes together into an entity that it can’t be a coincidence The painting is so outstanding as well as stunning to look at since the meaning of it with the content of it. All of which combine together and make this unforgettable masterpiece.
