It is often said that teachers do not need to teach pronunciation correctly for their learners because people come from different countries will not have the same accents. From my perspective, I oppose the view and my reason will be explained in the following paragraph. It seems to me that pronunciation is a basic knowledge which we should spend more time practicing it when we are studying English. I will give you the specific reason that according to my practical experience. I think if we are good at pronunciation, it could give us more opportunities to improve our speaking English. In fact, I am a student and my major is English Language. In the first semesters, I felt very dejected and had no interested in studying due to I only half understood what my teachers were saying. And the main reason for this situation is my pronunciation was bad and I could not speak, hear, and understand the lessons thoroughly. Therefore, I have decided to take a pronunciation course at Viet Hieu FEC for two months. At this English center, my teacher spends a great deal of time teaching the phonemic chart for us. After each class, I practiced by recording my voice to recognize pronunciation mistakes. Day by day, my pronunciation has clearly improved and I have started to be more confident when speaking English. After a pronunciation course, I could hear and recognize the connected speech in native speakers communications. As a result, when I am good at pronunciation, it gives me more movitation to learn other skill of English such as listening or speaking. I used to watch TED Talk at least three times a week due to improve my speaking skill. In this application, I tried to hear and repeat whatever the speakers say. By this way, I could hear a lot of different speaker’s accents who come from a large number of different countries. And now, I could speak English confidently. To sum up, I believe that teachers should teach pronunciation for their students carefully. It is not only a basic knowledge of English but also helps learners improve their speaking skill effectively like mine. Beside of speaking skill, it is able to sharpen up other skills such as listening or reading.
