price of bananas in four countries between 1994 and 2004
price of bananas in four countries between 1994 and 2004 1aw3L
The line graph illustrates the changes in banana prices in Japan, France, Germany and the USA from 1994 to 2004. Units are measured in US dollars per kilogram.
Overall, it is clear that while the two countries with the highest banana prices fluctuated wildly, the countries with the lowest prices saw smaller fluctuations. Moreover, despite the changes in banana prices in all countries, the order from highest to lowest remained unchanged at the end.
In terms of the two countries with high banana prices, Japan had the greatest price in 1994 at just below $2. It then reached a peak of approximately $2. 8 before dropping drastically to $2 in 1996. Then, it fluctuated wildly, hitting a trough at just over 1. 5 in 2001 before ending at $2. 5 in 2004. Likewise, in France the figure started a slightly lower price at about $1. 6 in 1994 and remained relatively steady until 1999. Then, it fluctuated between $1. 8 and $1, ending at $1. 5 in 2004. Therefore, the gap between both countries grew much wider in the final year.
In contrast, the other two countries did not witness such major changes. In 1994, the numbers for Germany and the USA started at about $1. 5 and $0. 75, respectively. The price in Germany then fluctuated slightly until 2002 before stabilizing at around $1. 1 in 2004. Similarly, the price of bananas in the USA climbed moderately by about $0. 4 and remained stable until the end of the period. However, despite all of then fluctuations in banana prices, the four countries had the same relative position at the end of the period as at the beginning.
