The bar chart shows the time spending by UK residents on different types of telephone calls between 1995 and 2002. Overall, the number of minutes spent on mobiles and national and international-fixed line rose while that on local-fixed line fluctuated over the period. Looking at the details, local fixed line calls accounted for the highest number of time throughout the period, rose from 72 billion minutes in 1995 to just under 90 billion minutes in 1998. After peak at 90 billion minutes in the following year, the amount of time spent on these calls had fallen back to the 1995 figure by 2002. While, the time spent on national and international fixed line calls grew steadily from 38 billion minutes to 61 billion minutes at the end of the period though the growth was quicker over the last two years. During the same period, there was a dramatical increase in the proportion of time spent on mobile calls from 2 billion minutes to 46 billion minutes. This rise is particularly noticeable between 1999 and 2002, during which time the use of mobile phones tripled. Overall, because local fixed line calls were still the most popular in 2002, the gap between the three categories narrowed considerable over the second half of the period in question.
