The chart illustrates the recycling rates of four different materials (paper and cardboard, glass, aluminum cans, and plastics) in one country between 1982 and 2010. Overall, paper and cardboard recycling rates were the highest, followed by glass containers. Recycling of aluminum cans experienced the most significant increase, while plastic recycling rate were the lowest, rising only slightly over the period. In 1982, about 65% of paper and cardboard was recycled. This figure fluctuated before reaching a peak of 80% in 1994. From then on, however, it decreased steadily to a level of 70% in 2010. In 1982, half of all glass containers were recycled. This figure dropped to 40% in 19990 but then experienced a gradual increase from 40% to 60% by 2010. Aluminum cans were first recycled in 1986, starting at about 5%. This figure climbed rapidly and by 2010 it had risen to 45%. On the other hand, recycling of plastics did not begin until 1990, and grew constantly but slowly, rising from around 2% to about 8% over the period.
