Large shopping malls are replacing small local shops in cities and towns. Do you think it is a positive development? VpE6
The impact of large shopping malls replacing small local shops, which was always debatable, has now become more controversial. While some people believe that it is a positive development, others completely disagree with this notion. This essay will elaborate both sides of the debate, and thus lead to a logical conclusion. At the outset, there are numerous reasons why replacing small local shops is a positive development, but the most conspicuous one stems from the fact that it brings more convenience to the hands of the shoppers. Consumers can just find everything they need from apparel to daily groceries in one place. An instance illustrating this action is the fact that Australian shoppers admit to save more than two hours shopping in large centers rather than in small local businesses. Furthermore, shopping malls help boost the economic by attracting large international investments. For example, global brands such as Gucci, Channel, Nike, Adidas and many more have opened their branches across several malls in Australia. Nevertheless, some people adopt an opposing view and tend to believe that small businesses being replaced is actually a negative thing to consider. It is largely attributed to the fact that shopping centers are crowding out and killing businesses. Consumers tend to spend money in big brands more than helping small business owners to put the food on their tables. For instance, the increase of 50% in shopping malls results in the surge of bankruptcy and collapse of many small businesses. Furthermore, shopping in large mall could be costly. This is because 80% of products sold here are twice the price in the outdoor markets. In conclusion, while there are strong arguments on both sides of the debate, I strongly believe that large shopping centers replacing small businesses is not a positive development.
