Given is the graph comparing four types of transports, namely road, water, rail and pipeline in term of the quantities of goods delivered in the UK over the period from 1974 to 2002. One fascinating fact highlighted by the figure is that the total goods transported by road, water and pipeline increased during the research period. The exception to this was rail which shows some fluctuations. Looking closely at the figures, after experiencing a slight rise to nearly 80 million tonnes during the first 15 years, the amount of goods transported by road went up dramatically to around 100 million tonnes. With regard to water, the figure for goods delivered was stable at 40 million tonnes during the first 4 years prior to seeing an upward trend to about 60 million tonnes, stayed at the same level and then surged merely over 60 million tonnes. The figure for pipeline which displayed an increase fivefold to over 20 million tonnes from 1974 to 1982, followed by being constant in next 8 years, dropped to 20 million tonnes in the next few years and then stayed at the same level in the last years. With reference to rail, after remaining steady at 40 million tonnes in the first 4 years, the amount of good transported hover between 30 million tonnes and 40 million tonnes in the last years.
