FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING IN SPAIN INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to evaluate the foreign language learning system in Spain, to comment which are the languages learned and to evaluate the learners’ profiles and the places where they can acquire the knowledge in order to give some recommendations that could be taken into consideration for improvements. LANGUAGES LEARNED Approximately sixty percent of the languages learned in Spain correspond to English, whereas French and other minor languages represent a forty. Nevertheless, there exists already a wide range of people that are not able to achieve at least an intermediate level due to the lack of measures in order to expand the acquisition of languages skills in the country. PEOPLE’S PROFILES AND PLACES TO LEARN No sooner was English requested in job and academic positions than it was of interest for scholars and professionals highly qualified. The more they want to rise in their career the better to improve their abilities. They can join international stages, take courses in university or academies as well as going to exchanges in pubs. In contrast, people in high school remain in the basic’s levels. The main reason why this happens is that most of the teachers don’t use a participatory methodology, not to mention their just B2 level requested. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING Taking all these in account, my recommendations are as follows: using an involving approach to language so as to make students conscious of the benefits of learning languages and encouraging exchange programs or local activities with native people. Implementation of the above ideas would result in a substantial improvement in the concerning matter.
