The line graph illustrates changes in the intake of spreads like margarine, low fat and reduced spreads and butter between 1981 and 2007.
Overall, people’s tendency to consume butter and margarine showed and decreasing trend, while the consumption of low fat and reduced spreads increased significantly, and became the most preferred spread by the end of the period.
In 1981, butter was the most preferred spread at approximately 142 grams, but it showed a marginal fall during the 26 years periond after reaching the peak of nearly 160 grams. At the end of the period, people consumed approximately 50 grams butter only. Similarly, the margarine consumption dropped significantly from nearly 85 grams to 40 grams between 1981 to 2007.
In contrast, the consumption of low fat and reduced spreads showed an increase from approximately 10 grams to 65 grams between 1996 and 2007. It was the least preferred spread in 1996. However, its usage went up and reached close to 70 grams after peaking at over 80 grams in 2001.
