Johnson once said that William Shakespeare is the soul of the times, the genius of the stage, he belongs not only to his era but also to all eras. It can be seen that, in the eyes of everyone, William Shakespeare has always been considered Britain's greatest writer and a playwright ahead of his time. In the year 1564, Shakespeare was born in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was a mayor who often presided over plays, and his mother was the daughter of an honorable family. He married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 years old, and they had three children: Susanna Hall and twins, Hamnet Shakespeare and Judith Quiney. In 1585, he left his hometown for London while the theater was in the capital during a hectic period, England was under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He came here to find a direction for his ambition, but the road to Shakespeare's art was arduous. At first, he worked as a keeper at the theater gate, then as a ticket-collector, and most gloriously, when he became a playwright. Through so many hardships, Shakespeare rose from a man without a degree or an aristocrat, but became a famous playwright that the whole world admired and respected. The celebrated period of his career, in which Shakepeare produced the most famous series of works, was the period from 1589 to 1613. He has bestowed on human literature 38 plays, 2 narrative poems, 154 sonnets, and a variety of other poems. His early plays were mainly comedies and historical dramas, which he increased in artistic sophistication in the late sixteenth century. Shakespeare's works show equal reverence and moral values for people of all classes and races. He synthesized all the best quintessence of literature: ancient literature, folk literature, Renaissance literature, to create his own literary and artistic works. Not only that, his works also show two contemporary tragic trends, which are fresh and gentle, but also creepy and bloody, and at the same time, they reflect the extraordinary transformation of the times, both the brilliant and the dark, tragic and humorous. His works are like realistic paintings, capable of capturing and recreating British society at that time in order to condemn the old and outdated concepts and the dirty feudalism of the elite beliefs and customs that bound people. “Romeo and Juliet” is a clear example and representative of the picture of society and people in that period. The writing partly shows a harsh aspect of life and integrates into it the thoughts and aspirations of the author about progressive thought and the desire for freedom. And "Romeo and Juliet" brought Shakespeare to the status of a monument in theatrical art. The play "Romeo and Juliet" was written circa 1594-1595, based on the true story of the feud between the Montague and Capulet families in medieval Verona (Italy). Verona is also the setting for the story, where the Montague and Capulet families have a long-standing grudge. Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague fell in love at first sight at the gala dinner held at Capulet's house, because it was a masquerade party so Romeo was able to blend in. To secretly wed, this couple sought the help of Friar Laurence. Due to a conflict, Juliet's cousin Tybalt killed Romeo's very close friend Mercutio, who was Juliet's cousin. Romeo stabbed Tybalt to death in order to avenge his friend. As a result, the enmity between the two families became deeper than before. Romeo was banished from Verona and exiled because of murder charges. Juliet was compelled to marry the Count of Paris by her parents because everyone believed that Romeo and Juliet's love affair had ended when Romeo left. Juliet approached Monk Laurence for assistance. The monk gave her a dose of sleeping pills, taken as if she were dead. The drug worked for 42 hours. The priest will tell Romeo to come to the crypt to save her from Verona. Before the priest had time to notify Romeo, he heard that Juliet had died, and Romeo painfully fled back to Verona. On the way back, he bought a very poisonous drug for himself. Romeo stabbed Paris to death in the cemetery to meet Juliet, then drank poison to commit suicide with his sweetheart. As soon as Romeo collapsed, Juliet's potion stopped working. She woke up and saw Romeo dead next to her. Because she was so heartbroken to see such a scene, Juliet pulled a knife and committed suicide. It seemed that the power of love as well as the willingness to sacrifice everything to protect the love of Romeo and Juliet would make them completely happy together forever. However, Shakespeare left a sad ending to their love story, both of them had to die. Although the ending of this story is extremely painful, it succeeds in highlighting two elements. Every event or detail that takes place in the story is an artistic image containing the message of the author. The first is the art of tragedy-one of the hallmarks of Shakespeare's cult works. And the second thing is that the author has skillfully used metaphor to clearly depict the picture of Romeo and Juliet's minds. The first tragedy that the author has erected is the love of a couple who are very balanced in terms of beauty and lineage, but encounter many difficulties due to an enduring feud between two families. Romeo and Juliet were disastrous characters from the time they were in the womb because they were born into two families with a long-standing enmity with each other, and that was also the source of the uncertainties in their love life later. Besides, a series of other unexpected events, such as Tybalt's aggressive nature, caused the heart-rending death of Mercutio, himself, and Romeo's exile. On the other hand, Tybalt's death and Romeo's exile could not separate their love. The feudal rites, or even the long-standing animosity between the two families, did not deter them from achieving their goal of freedom from marriage restrictions. Then even the talent, fame, fortune, and love of Paris did not change Juliet's heart. Moreover, when Juliet took drugs to fake death and had to lie in the vault next to Tybalt's body located nearby, it didn't change her mind. Romeo is not afraid to hide in danger to find Juliet. Both characters do not mind the hardships of coming together, wishing to be together. However, it is not that they do not have concerns about whether this determination is right or wrong. Juliet sometimes thinks of those separations, but in the end, she doesn't see them as an obstacle she is willing to remove to think of her love "only his last name is my adversary, but if you are not a Montague, you are still you. " And Romeo was the complete opposite, he thought about it all the time. When he knew that he loved Juliet, Romeo exclaimed: "I hate my name, because it is her enemy". Although he was really happy to be in love with Juliet, he still thought about the enmity between the two families, and that was a huge obstacle in his mind. In Romeo's mind, it seemed that he believed in predestined fate, but he always acted against it, turning it to his own will, which led him to tragedy. Even though "Romeo and Juliet" still belongs to the category of old-fashioned tragedy, taking hatred as the cause of its tragedy, the work is always new in the minds of readers. The reason for this is that the author has cleverly put them in a situation where they come together by chance, but there are many consecutive uncertainties that come to them in a very logical sequence. The two main characters try to overcome this impedient, another impedient comes their way, which creates the fascinating thrill of the work. The story becomes even more interesting when the author creates the spatial and temporal structure of the play that takes place in just four days and the space is expanding. The location is always changing; sometimes in the house, once in the garden of the Capulet family, occasionally in the street, sometimes in the crypt. Nonetheless, the most unique feature of this play is probably the art of characterizing the character's personality. Romeo and Juliet have a very separate personalities that perhaps in literature we have never met. The special thing here is that they love each other passionately and faithfully, not enjoying happiness together under the sun, they are ready to decease together, in the same place, to be together forever. That is why their love is always the most beautiful and romantic love in linguistic literature. Despite being tragic, Shakespeare does not confine his creatures to the pattern of tragedy. He put a lot of comedy elements into the tragedy, giving the tragedy an optimistic and cheerful atmosphere. Romeo and Juliet's love affair has a little more cheerful atmosphere thanks to the presence of a nanny character who seems to be an unaffected character. Her comments about Romeo and her dialogues with Juliet are actually teasing jokes. It helps the two main characters forget the atmosphere of hatred around them. Not only that, there were times when Shakespeare also included some scenes full of joy in the play to remove the heavy atmosphere surrounding the love of Romeo and Juliet. For example, the scene where they make their vows under the moonlight in the Capulet house is a very romantic scene, or the stage where the monk Laurence blesses them in the church. It is the general situation of society, family and their own circumstances that have contributed to the painful fate of two people. At the same time, their love and their deaths have touched people's hearts, transforming the relationship between the two families. The tragic death of a young couple awakened two families. Next to the bodies of two people, the two families forgot their old feud and shook hands to reunite. That is the distinctive tragic art in the work of William Shakespeare. His tragic character is not an oversized character, he is simply a real person often encountered in life. He does not have the notion that the tragic character must be too godly or have supernatural powers, but his characters are human beings who still have shortcomings that are not strong enough to cope with external circumstances, such as Romeo and Juliet. Although it looks simple, it is a masterpiece that makes us admire his conventional of the day writing style. It can be seen that Shakespeare fought for human freedom in the happiness of love and in brave action against evil. Romeo and Juliet is one of those works. Although the work was composed in the last years before England turned to the Renaissance, we can clearly see the humanism that the philosophy of the author conveys in the work. The humanism in the work "Romeo and Juliet" that the author integrates is a progressive thought movement, respecting and promoting people in earthly life. Their death is a wake-up call for all mankind to respect the freedom of human happiness and love. In a dark and cold situation, lovers Romeo and Juliet are still warm because there is love. Love brings breath and vitality to the soul if it is pure love. Shakespeare wants people to have a strong sense of the individual's role, the right to life, and the right to happiness, so humanism was warmly received by everyone. The catastrophe of Romeo and Juliet is also the great human cultural voice of Shakespeare, contributing to English literature and world literature. The desire for eternal and immortal love is always the dream of everyone, but not everyone dares to stand up and fight for that love. Through the two characters, Romeo and Juliet, the author wants to express a human message: pure, sincere, beautiful love can melt hatred and prejudice. Apparently, at the end of the play, both Romeo and Juliet died idealistically and the freedom of their love happiness remained forever. Romeo and Juliet's love affair proves the power of love. Loving Juliet, Romeo did all sorts of extraordinary things to make her happy. He had crossed the high walls of the Capulet, that is, the grim darkness of medieval enmity and hatred. This retention of hatred is a cruel cut that weighs heavily on a couple who are in love and are ready to sacrifice for love. In conclusion, "Romeo and Juliet" is an everlasting love song, a work praising the power of love to conquer hatred and the evil, dark forces in society.
