OPENING REMARKS
by the President of Malaysia
at the Opening Ceremony of the ASEAN Summit 2021
Your Majesty, Excellencies Leaders of ASEAN,
Secretary-General of ASEAN,
ASEAN Senior Officials and Heads of Government,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the government and people of Malaysia, I am very honored to be welcomed to this ASEAN Summit 2021.
This year remarks the 54th anniversary of the ASEAN establishment. The ASEAN was founded in Bangkok, Thailand in 1967, with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration that addressed the aims and purposes of the ASEAN in the vision of regional economic growth, peace and stability, and cultural development. And today, we proudly gather here with the friendly chairmanship of Brunei Darussalam, to protect those aims and purposes.
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Malaysia and the ASEAN community are on the path of development with many promising opportunities in various fields in the international arena, however, we also face many challenges at the moment, especially the emergence of the covid - 19 pandemic as a warning bell about other problems that may threaten our community in the future. It cannot be denied that Malaysia and the ASEAN family are facing the rather dire situation of the covid - 19 pandemic and post-pandemic consequences. We also need to find answers to loads of questions of economic recovery, multilateral relations, and flexible solutions in education. Moreover, it is necessary to directly raise awareness of the security between countries in the region, the issue of maritime boundaries. Finally, an urgent and crucial thing is climate change adaptation. Those are some challenges that Malaysia strongly believes that we should resolve in this ASEAN summit.
Following the theme of this Summit - we care, we prepare, we proper, Malaysia wishes to strengthen and tighten the partnership of countries in the region, exchange together, create more conditions for learning and sharing experiences on recovery and flexibility in areas such as the economy, education, society, army during the epidemic period, plan specific goals for solutions on climate change adaptation. All for an “Advancing and sustainable ASEAN”.
The President of Malaysia would like to thank Brunei Darussalam for this friendly chairmanship, as the great opportunity for all of us to come together to address regional challenges for the sustainable peace, stability, and prosperity of the ASEAN. Thank you to all of the senior officials and Heads of Government of all ASEAN members for coming here today with a mutual vision and mission of the Association. Finally, thank you distinguished guests for your attendance, which we truly treasure.
