This proverb means that whenever you go, you should act politely and respect local customs and tradinitions, and act as people are acting in this place. The knowledge about foreign countries, their culture, brings many benefits to the immigrants. They know the positive things that are allowed to do there and negative ones that should be avoided. Following the local culture when you're abroad is a mark of respect and has many benefits. Integrating with locals is a great way to make friends, find a good job, learn about local life. Unfortunately, we can't learn everything and sometimes may act awkwardly, or even more may find yourself in deep trouble, in such situations as: a woman in a bikini on the streets of Saudi Arabia, or a person from a country where the weed is legalised in an East Asian countrys found in possession of marijuana, where the death penalty could apply, etc. And this is just one small example which shows that our customs are different from others.
