The reading and lecture are both about quackers which is a sound produce under the water. The author of the reading feels that this odd sound is unable to detect and it moves at a great speed and presents several reasons for this casue. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that quackers are the mysterious phenomenon and on one actually find the solution to this specific problem. To begin with, the author argues that a kind of sound is made by the orca whales to attract the other orca whales during the mating period. He also mentions that this similar sound is detected by the submarines. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that it is plausible but unlikely not a good idea. He also states that orca whales live near the surface of the ocean whereas submarine locates underground then how sonar can detect the sound. Second, the author suggests that the sound may make by the Giant squid who are very intelligent and they live in the deep ocean. He also adds that they have a soft body without a skeleton and that's why sonar can not detect them. The lecturer rebuts this by mentioning that Russian submarines detected the sound 1960 and reported it 1980 decade. He also elaborates this by mentioning that Giant squid still then produce this odd sound and it is not possible that they suddenly disappear in 1980. Third, the author posits that may be military technology of the of another country secretly tracking the submarine. He also states that this foreign submarine creates the sound and they have a kind of technology which is not recognized by the sonar. In contrast, the lecturer position is that when the foreign submarine moved it must create a sound from the engine. He also additionally says technology was not so advance that they manufactured the silent engine.
