Children nowadays, are spending more time with their electronic devices such as cellphones. It has become a trend for every youngster to have a one. In many countries, schools have banned students from bringing and using their cellphones on school premises. I see this as a constructive development because cellphones are baneful for children both academically, physically and mentally.
Availability of mobile phones cause children to lose focus in class. When students have it with them, there is a compelling urge to keep checking for notification from various applications. Due to this, they are unable to concentrate fully on the lecture being delivered. As a result, their academic performance will get adversely effected. In a recent study conducted in the UK concluded that students from schools which banned cellphones were performing prominently better as compared to those which did not had a ban. They concluded that the prohibition of cellphone adds an hour a week of study for the students. Therefore, if the use of cellphones is reduced, the performance of students will get better.
Children are becoming social virtually. In their free time at school, they prefer to use cellphones to spend it. Moreover, their participation in sports has also reduced as a result of this. It is more entertaining for them to spend time chatting or browsing on social media then playing sports or chatting face to face. When we remove phones from schools, children will have more time to spend with their friends and attending physical activities. As a result, their mental and physical health will improve.
In conclusion, the performance of children increases when schools disallow them to bring cellphones. They pay more attention in class and enjoy more time with people instead of a screen.
