Plato draws out the case for women and men to be treated as equal by first acknowledging that men’s and women’s natures are different, and that it is a seeming contradiction to say that they should enjoy the same pursuits. He then proceeds to explain that it is not correct to assume that just because something is verbally correct, does not mean that it is morally correct because we must consider the “nature” as it is related to the “pursuit”, giving the example of women and men differing in the fact that women can bear children but a man cannot and then asking what this fact has to do with the right of a woman to pursue an education. After this he provides other examples including women’s right to participate in politics as long as their “nature” does not interfere with their ability to reason fairly.
