I worked for three months at Diftco, near Birmingham, under MS Witten's supervision. The internship's goal was to get management experience in an industrial setting. Diftco is a construction equipment exporter and one of the region's most lucrative businesses. I spent most of my time at the Export Office, where I was in charge of preparing shipment documents. In the warehouse where the equipment is constructed and packed, I was also in charge of inspecting containers. I was successful in learning how to utilize the warehouse's automatic barcode system. This is a sophisticated automatic system that gives each component in the warehouse a code and a location. However, it was interesting to learn that no instrument, no matter how smart, can totally eradicate human mistake. The importance of double-checking information was maybe the most important lesson I learnt. When I accidentally sent a container to Austria instead of Australia because I misread my call response on the phone, I realized the necessity of double-checking everything. The company is well-organized and prosperous, with a highly motivated, hard-working, and dedicated workforce. However, I believe I would be more productive in a setting with more variety and less repetitive paperwork. One aspect of the company's operations that may be improved is the waste problem in the warehouse. This problem can be resolved with a more organized recycling policy. Last semester's international commerce studies course module was tremendously helpful in understanding how a computer like Diftco functions. I was able to create an excellent rapport with the export employees as a result of this preparation. Communication with the warehousemen, on the other hand, was much more challenging, owing to the fact that many of them do not know English. Overall, the internship was a wonderful experience that allowed me to obtain valuable expertise in a short period of time. However, because I work alone the majority of the time, I was unable to attain my goal of gaining managerial experience. First-year students would benefit the most from a placement at Diftco, while second-year students would profit from a post with Ritter managerial responsibilities.
