MODERN DAY PEOPLE HAVE FAITH IN CONSPIRACY THEORIES Unlikely in the past, today people can easily access information about anything with the web, social media, and television. This accessibility may sound like people are being well-informed on topics they are looking for but usually, it doesn’t come like that. Unfortunately, there are so many sources of information and many of which are not even based on credible facts or data. Therefore, the information found on the web are prone to be unreliable data which is likely to cause ‘’conspiracy theories’. ’ Conspiracy theories tend to have a snowball effect in society. Thus, I will argue that people are more prone to believe conspiracy theories because of their evolution and since the internet is flooded with incorrect information and the social media cause the information to spread even faster. One of the reasons why people are more prone to believe conspiracy theories is not coming from recent history but from humankind’s ancestor’s behaviors. The first modern human is also known as the ‘’Homosapien’’ appeared approximately 200. 000 to 300. 000 years ago. Furthermore, when people’s actions are being examined, the evolutionary time period should be taken into consideration because most of our potential behaviors are coming from survival instincts that were shaped thousands of years ago. Humankind evolved in such a way to believe in conspiracy theories to increase survival skills. In that time, the skill of suspecting from another group can be counted as life-saving. Foreseeing and calculating the danger or threat helped early humans to get away from dangerous places to safer places. One could even strike, eliminate or chase away, however, the other group neutralizes the danger. Whatever the reason is, humankind developed suspecting skills to protect themselves and prevent harm from happening to human in early phases (van Prooijen, 2019). Conspiracy theories are information about a situation or event that solicits a conspiracy by menacing from powerful groups, generally for political reasons, even though there are more reasonable explanations. Whereas there are more sensible explanations for the events, there is still a wide percentage of people who are believing conspiracy theories. Hence, humankind arguably tends to rely on sensual explanations instead of reasonable explanations. Another reason why people tend to rely on conspiracy theories is the modern media types that are frequently used. the effect and the utilization of social media increase very quickly. Any information is quickly reachable, thanks to these media types, that people can access them in almost no time. Yet, this reachability may be against humanity since there is no control over who is sharing the information. Anyone in the world can sign up for these media types and start sharing stuff on the platform right away. Unfortunately, there is no control over the reliability of the source by the platform, that is something users tend to be aware of. If the receiver is not conscious of the reliability of the source this may cause conspiracy theories to spread like a plague in no time. Such an illustrating example is that people believe that the earth they are living is actually flat instead of a sphere. A growing number of people started to believe this fact the government is lying about the earth being a sphere and The Flat Earther’s source of information is just YouTube videos which are saying ‘’Earth is actually Flat! ’’ and podcasts like-Flat Earth Conspiracy (Burdick, 2018). A more recent example is the COVID pandemic that humankind is experiencing is believed to be fake by a high amount of people. It is rumored that governments are faking it in order to sell drugs to society. There are people believing the vaccines for the disease are also performing fake and they are making propaganda for the ‘’Anti-Vaccine’’ movement through social media (Smith, 2017). Thus, modern-day people have a tendency to have faith in conspiracy theories due to social media platforms. In social media platforms, everyone has a right to state add any fact without giving any proof and many people consider without thinking or researching and count that information can be true. One of the strongest arguments against that people is not more likely to believe conspiracy theories is that true information is more accessible today. There are a variety of suitable resources of data on the web and they are mostly without any charge and convenient to access by everyone. Nevertheless, there are also websites and social media pages that fully consist of fake information and conspiracy theories about countless topics. Unluckily, individuals today are acknowledging what they are seeing on the internet without questioning it, not paying attention to the source of fact, and sharing it with others like it is trustworthy data even though it is not. Vaccination has been a problematic topic in the United States over the years. Though the majority had no problem with vaccination there were a huge number of people who were against vaccination. In a survey made in 2000 19% of the parents in the United States had ‘’concerns about vaccines’’. This number increased to 50% by the survey made in 2009. The numbers of conspiracy theory believers have been increased even though there was no solid proof that vaccinations had a negative effect on people in that 9 years (Smith, 2017). Despite the fact that people can reach true information easily, numbers showing that people are not considering looking up for the reliability of the source. Health care is an important topic and false information can cause the patient’s status to become worse and can even lethal for the patient’s life. For that reason, especially on health care topics, individuals should be extra careful and cautious about the data they are receiving. Recent work has shown that around 80% of individuals look up health information on the internet yearly instead of asking for professional health care (Smith, 2017 ). This might be the basis of how conspiracy theories are increased among society. Consequently, even if obtaining reliable information is straightforward, people are still more prone to accept conspiracy theories as true because of their nature and social media, and the internet. The internet and modern media types are like an open sea filled with endless information and data. Tragically, this sea is also filled with fake information and conspiracy theories. These data are spreading faster than the flu as users are not questioning the source of data. Numbers are showing that the faster one reaches stuff online, the faster they believe in conspiracy theories. As technology improving and getting better every day, humanity will be able to reach information online faster. That means more people potential for being part of this claim and more people can get infected with conspiracy theories. Works Cited Burdick A. (30 May, 2018) Looking For Life On A Flat Earth.
