In this set of materials, the reading states that sailors in Russian submarines hear strange sounds and berings up three different hypotheses to explain the sources of these sounds. However, the lecture finds all the ideas not exactly possible and provides some evidence to refute them all. First of all, the author of the passege claims that ocra whales produced these sounds for calling male and female for mating. In contrast, the lecture argues that although this idea is plusible, living the ocra near the surface rejected this idea because submarines were in deeper part of ocean and also, the ocra whales can be detected by sailors. Furthermore, it is mentioned in the reading passage that giant squids are another possible source for these sounds because it is difficult for sonar to find them and they may have the ability to emit sounds. On the contrary, the lecture contends that idea is not true for the following reason. The sailors detect one giant squid in 1960 and report it and the sounds disapear in 1980 while the giant squid continues to live in 1980. So, there is no reason for stoping the sound while giant squids still live in the ocean. Finally, the author is of the opinion that third idea for source of the sound is submarines from other countries because it is difficult to detect other submarines. Conversely, the lecture explains that the sounds always move around and change direction quickly. On the other hand, it is impossible for submarine to change direction too fast.
