As early as the twelfth century A. D. , the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses, " massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories hig v.4

Reading and Listening both were talking about the theories of uses of building named Chaco Canyon. To begin with, the writer maintained that hundreds of people would lived in the Chaco Canyon and the house looks similar as apartment buildings. However, the lecturer disagreed with the statement of writer. The speaker claimed that there should be many fire places for cooking, however, there were only few fire places for each family. Also, he reveals that there were not enough rooms for 100 people in the house. Secondly, the writer stated that Chaco Canyon was used for storing food. On the other hand, the lecturer gave a voice why the people at that time did not use a floor or a big container to stole supply of food instead of empty rooms. Last, the writer proclaimed that Chaco Canyon was used as a ceremonial center and the large number of broken pots in the house would be places where meals had been prepared or served. On the contrary, the lecturer maintained that the pots were not the places where the meals came out, rather, it would be just used for construction.
