At the beginning, there were 210 000 immigrants in the UK. After growing to 310 000 people in one year later, this figure stayed constant until 1955 and increased minimally by 10 000 people in 1997. However, right after that time, the number of people moving into the UK soared substantially by 170 000 people in 2000 and stabilized at 490 000 people until 2001. In 2002, it reached a peak of 510 000 people.
In contrary, the figure of emigrants decreased by 30 000 people in 1994 and remained stable at 240 000 people between 1994 and 1995 before climbing moderately to 280 000 people in 1997. The number of people leaving the UK decline gradually to 260 000 in 1998 and followed by a sharp rise to 310 000 people in 2000. Then it dropped slightly by 5 000 people in 2001. At the end of the period, there were 360 000 emigrants in the UK.
