Overall, it is clear that there were downward trends in the number of employees in male was higher that of females during the survey period. Another critical point is that the number of factories was the highest in 1881 in comparison to other years. In the beginning observed year, the number of male employees was 287, 100, which was followed by a dramatic drop to 31, 000 in 1901. The same pattern can be seen in that of female employees and total employees. The figure for female employees was 190, 000, which was approximately half that of total employees with 477, 100 in 1851. These figures significantly decreased to 30, 000 and 61, 000 in 1901, respectively. Regarding the number of factories, it just has exactly 225 in 1851, before experiencing a strong increase and it peaked up at 721 in 1881. However, this figure slightly declined to 600 in the ending survey year.
