Overall, it is clear that the number of marriages decreased gradually, while the figure for divorces almost stayed the same over the period shown. Although the percentage of married people went down, this status still was the highest. In 1970, about 2, 5 million Americans got married per year, while the figure for divorces was 1 million. By 1980, the number of marriages stayed the same, whereas the figure for people in the USA getting divorced rose dramatically to 1, 4 million. The figures for both marriages and divorces fell to 2 million and 1 million respectively by 2000. On the other hand, in 1970, 70% of Americans were married, compared to 15% of people who had never gotten married. The figures for widowed and divorced were 8% and 20%, respectively. By 2000 saw the different proportion of marital status of adults in the USA, while the percentage of married people dropped to around 58%, the proportion of people who had never married and divorced went up to nearly 20% and 9%. Meanwhile, the figure for the widowed population fell to 5%.
