The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding GR8B
The given diagrams compare two distinct steps to prevent houses from the risk of being flooded. In general, it can be seen that houses are protected from flooding with or without using stopbank infront of them. Now, turning to the details, the first diagram reveals that stopbank is acted as a flood barrier in order to stop water from flooding homes. The stopbank is situated next to the river that is higher than the 10-year flood level, and prevents the excessive water flowing towards the house. Moreover, the houses is built with three pillars to prevent from flooding and a floodgate below the stopbank allows ponding to evacuate the water into the river. Likewise, as shown in the second diagram, when there is no stopbank, the house needs to be built in a way where its pillar height need to be raised. In this case, the height of the pillars is measured so that the floor of the house is 300nm above the 100-year flood level which is known to be "freeboard".
