Given flow chart illustrates how a hydroelectric power station produces electricity.
In overall there is tree major sections which consists of a reservoir dams which holds water flowing river, a big pipe which carries the water from reservoir and a generator which runs on the power of flowing water and generates electricity.
Water flows from a near by river is restricted by a huge dam which helps to store the water. There is intake valve is placed at the bottom of the high level reservoir, which is open at the daytime and will be closed on night. When the intake valve is opened water flows from the reservoir to generator through the big pipes placed between dam and generators. These pipes are in a declined position which is essential in increasing the speed of water flow. This water rushes of generators which is situated in the power station and creates electricity. In the generator kinetic energy of the water is converted into the electric energy. Generated electricity is then transmitted through the power lines to the national grid. The water passes through the turbine flows to a low-level reservoir. Although the turbines are used to generate electricity in the day time, in the night time it is used to pump water from low level reservoir to the high level reservoir. consequently the cycle is repeated continuously.
