The charts below describe the percentage of being capable of speaking foreign languages apart from English British students at one university in 2000 and 2010. yRNJE
The two pie charts compare the percentage of British undergraduates who could speak other languages apart from their mother tongue. Figures were collected from a particular university in the UK in 2000 and 2010. Overall, students who can speak Spanish outnumber the others, making it the most spoken language in both years. In addition, we can also see that the number of bilinguals are increasing over time. In 2000, one fifth of the students were only able to communicate in their first language. This figure then fell by half in 2010. Also, the number of French speakers saw a slight decrease by 5% from 15 % to 10%. Besides, German-fluent ones and trilinguals both shared the same proportion of 10%, which remained unchanged throughout the period. In contrast, Spanish speakers accounted for the largest segment of 30% in 2000, it then continued to rise by 5% afterwards. A similar pattern also happened to students who can speak another language besides the ones mentioned above, its figures went up from 15% to one fifth of the total.
