The given graph compares the proportions of British men and women who smoked over a period of 50 years starting from 1950. Overall, it is clear that while the figure for male smokers showed a downward trend, the opposite was true for females. It is also notable that male smokers greatly outnumbered females over the period shown. In 1950, it was recorded that nearly 80% of men smoked compared to 15% that of women and this figure decreased gradually to about 72% over the next 30 years. Meanwhile, the proportion of female smokers nearly doubled during the span of 50 years and hitting its peak at 40% by the year 1980. During the period from 1960 to 1980, while the figure for men experienced a significant drop from around 72% to over 40%. that of women also showed a drop from 40% to nearly 30%. Moreover, it can be seen that the overall number of smokers showed a decline over the period of 50 years.
