The graph displays the proportion of home owned and hired for accommodation in England and Wales in the period of 1918 to 2011. Overall, the households rented gradually decreased over the given time zone, whereas the ownership of accommodation followed a similar reverse direction compared to hired households. In 1918, the percentage of rented households was almost 77% which decreased up to 68% in 1939 and remained the same in 1953. Then the proportion of leased accommodation experienced a gradual decreased up to 2001 (31%). After that, there was a slight increase in 2011 (36%). On the other hand, the proportion of house proprietor was 22% in 1918, which increased up to 31% in 1939 and prevailed the same in 1953. Afterwards, the proportion marched upwardly at a constant rate up to 1991 (68%). After 10 years there was a marginal rise of 1%, which followed an unconventional downward trend of 6% and fixed at 63% in 2011. Interestingly, in 1971, the percentage of both owned and hired households were the same 50%.
