the chart below shows the japan's population by age groups starting in 1960 including a forecast to 2040. ndoL2
The graph compares the percentage of the Japanese population in three age groups during 80 years, starting in 1960 with projections towards 2040. Overall, the proportion of a 65+ age group in Japan increases, while that of people in age groups 0-14 and 25-64 in this country decreases over the given period. Also of note is that the figure for people over 65 is estimated to see the most significant rise during the span. Regarding the working-age group, starting at about 65%- the highest figure in 1960, its proportion fluctuated between 65% and 70% from 1970 to 2010 then dropped slightly to 60% in 2020, but thereafter, it is anticipated that about 58% of Japanese people will be in this age group by 2040. Similar changes are seen in the group of people aged 0 – 14, whose figure grew from 30% at the beginning of the period to about 35% in 1970, then it is projected to decline to 10% at the end of the period, the lowest level in the chart. In contrast, the percentage of Japanese people aged 65 and above was only 5% in 1960, however, its figure recorded a remarkable growth to 30% in 2020, then by 2040, an estimated approximately 35% of the Japanese population will be over 65 years old.
