The bar charts compare the educational involvements of students and their participation in science-related subjects in developing and industrialized countries between 1980 and 1990. Overall, it is obvious that the figure for industrialized countries is generally by far higher than the figure for developing countries in terms of total years of education, the number of scientists and technicians per 1000 people as well as research and development funds. People in developing nations attended school for an average of around 2 years in 1980, after which the figure rose slightly to under 4 years. By contrast, the figure for industrialized countries climbed from 9 years to nearly 11 years of schooling in ten years period. From 1980 to 1990, the number of scientists and technicians of developed countries increased significantly by almost 30 people to 70 per 1000 people, whereas the number for developing countries remained below 20 people. An opposite trend can be observed in the budget for research and development, while the industrial nations spend over 150 billion dollars in 1980 and then rose markedly to 350 billion in ten years later, the expenditure of developing countries showed negative growth, from 50 billion to 25 billion in 1990.
