They produced gas sensors using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with the help of ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methyl midazlium) without using any extra chemical pigments. The hydroxyl groups of the films were converted to amine groups through surface modification. Their amino groups react selectively with formaldehyde gas, and the formula reaction among them is: ( R–COH + R′–NH2 → R–C=N–R′ + H2O). figure 20b indicates the colour change of three sensors to diverse aldehyde gas, the most left column of every control figure shows the 0 ppm aldehyde gas. figure 20c shows the selectivity of three CNC film gas sensors with different colors compared to different VOCs [256].
