Optoelectronic nose, based on detecting the color change pattern of colorimetric sensor arrays, has emerged as a versatile method for identifying diverse chemical analytes and distinguishing between similarly complex mixtures. Rapid advances in digital imaging and computing power suggest that future optoelectronic noses will use regular pens connected to Bluetooth readers with a disposable sensor array. The development of high-precision portable devices using standard imaging devices with the capability of real-time processing and analysis has progressed considerably and is increasingly meeting expectations for real-world use.
