The given diagram details the process of manufacturing food in manmade environment. In general, there are 5 main stages, starting with the ingredient collection, and finishing with the wastage of food. However, the whole procedure does not work at maximum efficiency, because marginal food loss can occur at some phases. At first, natural components like meat, vegetable, and fruit are harvested in mass amount, but during the pre-harvest and harvesting step in developing countries, 12% and 25% of food respectively are left behind. In the next stage, all the gathered ingredients are transported to various factories, which accounts for 10% of rich countries’ budget, namely America. Subsequently, the raw food is placed on conveyer belts before being sent to the processing machine. It is worth mentioning that during such phase, 10% of dairy products, 5% of fish products, and 4% of meat products fail to reach the packaging area, while around 33% of green food is nowhere to be seen. Next, the produced food is conveyed to the packaging zone, where food is labelled and sealed with popular brands. Similar to previous stages, this one is home to many cases of food loss, 40% of which are due to unhygienic environment. Finally, the end products are distributed to the hands of consumers, but occasionally, food misplacing happens, and this trend makes up for 40% of food losses in industrial countries. It is reported that once the food is thrown away, 3% of the food is reused, while 40% of landfills result from this phenomenon.
