The line graph provides data on the goods transported by four different means (road, water, rail and pipeline) in the UK between 1974 and 2002. Units are measured in a million tonnes. Overall, road and water remained the most popular transportations for goods in the given period while rail and pipeline were the least favourable. In 1974, the road was the more popular way to transport any goods in the UK, starting from around 70 million tonnes and climbing to just over 80 million tonnes around 1992. By the final year, roads were used for around 100 million tonnes transported goods. Similarly, water saw a similar pattern, starting from just under 40 million tonnes in the first year. By 1982, the number increased to just under 60 million tonnes and marginally falling to around 50 million tonnes by 1998. In the final year, water was the second favourite means of transporting any good in the UK, climbing to over 60 million tonnes. On the other hand, rail was the second favourite during 1974 along with water but declined over time and dropping to the lowest at around 30 million tonnes during 1995. In the final year, the number grew to just over 40 million tonnes. By contrast, the pipeline was the least favourite method of transporting goods in the given period, climbing to a maximum of just over 20 million tonnes around 1995 and staying at the same level by the final year.
