The diagram provides information about how the life of salmon starts, ends and restarts. It is clear that these sea creatures usually go through three key stages throughout their life in three kinds of locations in the river. In the beginning, approximately five-year old adult salmon, which are up to 76 cm long and live in the open sea, come and lay their eggs among tiny stones under reeds where it is very safe for them. Also, what makes it an ideal location is that the rate at which the river flows there is slow, making it convenient for the eggs to stay there until they hatch. During the next five or six months, the eggs turn into small fish known as “fries” whose body size differs between 3cm and 8cm. The ideal habitat for them is the river located in lower altitudes. However, as the water runs in there from waterfalls, it flows quite fast. Living there for about four years, fries turn into smolts that are 12-15 cm big. They are then ready to move to live in the open sea for approximately five years. During this period, they become fully grown adult salmon and go back to the early mentioned river to lay their eggs. This is how the process takes place again.
