The two maps below illustrate the changes of Frenton between 1990 and 2012. Overall, there is no doubt that the town had less green and more buildings appeared than 22 years ago.
Regarding similarities, as we can see, the High Street dividing the town into Western and Eastern areas was still there with no change. Besides, to the West side of the High Street, the school, located in the north of the town and the library which was right on the left side of the street were both maintained throughout the period. In addition, the hospital by the library was also there but it was expanded to meet the citizen’s needs.
On the other hand, we are also able to see several differences of Frenton clearly. The East side of the High Street had a dramatic transformation. In more detail, the theatre and shops which were in the south of the town became a cinema and supermarket, respectively. The Café and park were converted into a hotel and golf course and some flats appeared in the north-east of Frenton in 2012. Noticeably, the playing fields with trees in the north-west and the houses were also all removed to build blocks of flats. Furthermore, West to the High Street, the bank by the school was demolished to make space for a new restaurant; whereas the trees in the South were cut down to make way for a technopark.
