Growing up as a child, I and my family members always witnessed miserable political-related news about protests being held downtown of Bangkok protesting about the fake democratic regime in Thailand that needs to be revolutionized every time we were dining at the dinner table. Being childish, at first, I had no idea of what was going on and why certain individuals prefer to be on one side of political affiliation - to have a different mindset from another opposing group. It was until I was an exchange student in the USA that I got to read a plethora of newspapers and historic documents as a part of an assignment in US History class, which accidentally led me to look at a ton of articles about the paramount social movement occurring at that time such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, silent protest at a public school in Des Moines, the story of women suffrage, and many more. Scrutinizing them and seeing ways these past events can alter our societies or history for the better, this ultimately answers the vital unsolvable question I had when I was a child: why do Thai people protest? At that exact time, I have grown an interest in the idea of the word “freedom”, and how one action can have a profound effect on one’s community. After I had decided that I wanted to do more research about this topic, I commenced reading through an arsenal of books that were written by influential or important people. Because of this, I came across one of the most stunning books I have ever read: Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville. Despite the fact that he was French, within one book, he conveyed the meaningful definition of democracy merely based on his empirical observation of the cultures of American people who dwelled during the 19th century. He also implied that the US’s way of living clearly portrays democratism from the five values including Laissez-Faire, Individualism, Populism, Egalitarianism, and Liberty. This instantly reflects the idea of why in many news and the vital historical events people risk their own life and attend the protest or why Yeonmi Park chose to escape from her home country -North Korea- and went on a hardship journey to South Korea: there was a discrepancy of freedom and opportunity in each group of people, and, unfortunately, the supremacy of superior group have excessive power. These books beneficially broaden my knowledge of democracy and create a new understanding of the term American dream. As a result, this exponentially invokes my feeling of empathy on all of the unfortunate people, who have a deficiency of liberty, and makes me crave to have the power to aid and improve all of the societies around the world; therefore, if I get to study Global Politics & Social Science, this subject will lead me to grasp more about the fundamental theories beyond the reasons of why this past and existing community choose to do various activities and their consequences in both microscale and macroscale, so I can utilize as well as apply them in a practical way. During my school years, I attended a seminar on “the 150th Anniversary of the Diplomatic Relationship between Spain and Thailand”. Listening to the Ambassador of Spain in Thailand and many significant peoples talking on stage, I caught important features of how Thai and Spanish people from the past to the present can maintain a sturdy bond and the benefit of it. As a result, this event enhanced my critical thinking skills by seeing how theories can potentially be put into practice from their history in a creative way. As I discussed with the Nordic Regional Police Attaché about the problem of Nordic prisoners, who were captivated in Thai jail, I got to know the significance of communication and the role of this occupation by ensuring his citizens were healthy. Additionally, I was an exchange student living in Prosper, Texas. Though, similar to foreign peoples, I had not agreed with the US citizens who voted for the republican party, living with a household who considered themselves “republican” highly reduces my political bias since talking to them made me understand that this party will benefit non-immigrants, if they win an election. In my perspective, this skill will be highly beneficial when it comes to making decisions or doing a debate. Furthermore, I was also a member of a school representative’s cheerleader team and have performed in a school play “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. ” These developed lots of skills such as teamwork, punctuality, adjusting to the recommendation of a director. Most importantly, though having many assignments to do while also having practice sessions, my skill of self-discipline and time management by knowing what time I should do which activities have been improved. Being a volunteer to teach the basic Spanish language to freshmen students for their mid-term test also helps me articulate the idea verbally in a much more effective way. Learning a foundation year in Global Politics & Social Science will give a basic insight into this field so that I am ready to pursue my further education in an undergraduate course and know which of the courses suits my interest the most. As I study at King’s College London, this place will provide the perfect environment to express my viewpoint and expand my way of thinking through hearing the vastly distinct idea of international students who were brought up in different areas of the world. My love and dedication to study in this field is immense, and from these reasons, the opportunity that your college provides will be the major key to accomplish my goal: a world which is globalized and everyone is equal.
