The given chart shows the rate of illiteracy in various regions including developed countries, Latin America, Oceania, Sub-Saharan Africa, Arab states and South Asia by both genders for the year 2000. Overall, it can be seen that the female population is the most illiterate in every part of the world, except for Latin America and the developed countries where there is only a marginal difference in illiteracy rates between females and their male counterparts. In regions with higher illiteracy rate such as South Asia, there is a considerable difference between the illiteracy rates of males and females, with about 55% female and 35% male illiterates. It is evident from the graph that, the South Asian population with a rate of about 55% and 35% of females and males respectively, is the most illiterate, followed by the Arab states and Sub-Saharan Africa where the rates are over 50% and just below 50% for females and slightly less than 30 and 30% for males, respectively. Whereas, the most literate ones are the developed countries with just about 1% of their citizens uneducated.
